Phoebe Tonkin Interview For TV.com

Where are you right now?
You know what, I am in a car park outside a dance studio. I'm taking a ballet class in an hour, but I'm wearing pants and I am literally sweating in the sun right now. [Laughs] Was that specific enough?

In Atlanta?
Yes, I'm in Atlanta.

[I do a silent fist-pump.] Last time I interviewed you it was for The Secret Circle and you joked that your co-stars Britt Robertson and Shelley Hennig's real-life Southern accents were starting to rub off on you. Now that you're playing an actual Southern character on The Vampire Diaries, are you planning to go full-Southern with your accent?
You know what, I guess Hayley does live in the South. But Hayley is like this world traveler who has been around the block, so I think she has a little bit of everything in her. And she's an orphan, so we don't really know where she came from, what accent she has. I'm just kind of going straight-up American so far.

This week we'll finally get to see the unveiling of what a Phoebe Tonkin character looks like on The Vampire Diaries. What's Hayley like so far? Is she nice, is she not nice? Is she sassy, is she shy?
She's a tomboy. She lost her parents when she was younger, so she sort of grew up running around with these packs of werewolves. She's a free spirit, she's kind of ballsy, she stands up to people a lot, I think just because she's had to take care of herself for so long. Yeah, so, she's strong. But in the sense that she's a good person. I think she has priorities of her own, but I don't think she's going to be manipulative like Faye—Faye would've done whatever it took to get what she wanted. But Hayley definitely has some secrets and some information that she's looking for, which is kind of more or less what brings her to Mystic Falls. She's trying to find something out.

Will we actually get to see you transform into a werewolf? Will you be rolling around screaming on the basement floor at any point?
Not on the show, no. [laughs] No, because she's already an experienced werewolf, so the transformation isn't a big deal. Unless she becomes a hybrid!

When you first signed on to play this part were you aware that guest-stars on The Vampire Diaries don't have a great survival rate? Were you concerned about being killed off right away?
Yeah, I have heard that. I'm hoping to defy those odds. I'm hoping! But the best thing about this show is that even when you die, you don't really die. You can always get brought back to life. So that's something I'm kind of holding onto just in case. But we'll see!

You have a pretty close real-life bestie who's already on the show (Claire Holt a.k.a. Rebekah). Is it like transferring high schools and your best friend already goes there?
I mean that is literally, exactly how it felt. Like on my first day Claire introduced me to everyone and showed me where I'd eat lunch, showed me where the bathrooms were, told me where to get snacks. I felt like I knew the coolest girl at high school and so it was a little bit easier of a transition. It's really scary when you start on a set and you don't know anyone, especially on this show because it's been going for four years, so I was really lucky to have an "in." I was really excited.

What are some of the main differences between The Secret Circle and The Vampire Diaries, with regard to working on it, but also what you get to do on camera?
On The Secret Circle, Faye had very particular objectives—to get her own magic back and to take over and be the best witch. Whereas on this show Hayley is a little bit more confused as to what she's looking for and where she came from and she's got a lot more questions that she wants to ask and have answered. In terms of just working on it, it's just a bigger cast. There are so many cast members and so many storylines to intertwine whereas on The Secret Circle, it was the six of us all together all the time and all our storylines more or less overlapped.

You're jumping from one very passionate fanbase to another that's passionate times a hundred. Are you nervous about your reception with TVD's fanbase, particularly if they didn't think much of The Secret Circle? It's a whole new group of superfans.
Of course. I really, really hope that the fans—I mean, they're such loyal fans on The Vampire Diaries—I really do hope that they like Hayley and they want to root for her to find out what she's looking for and aren't too threatened by her coming in and causing a few problems between Caroline and Tyler. There's obviously huge fans of that relationship—what's their name? Clyler? What's their shipping name? I'm not sure. But there are big fans of that relationship and obviously Hayley coming in could threaten that relationship. But yeah, I hope the fans like Hayley.

The impression I get from you, from reading interviews and speaking to you, is that you seem very girly and shy and nice, but you keep getting cast in these parts that are either badass, or bitchy, or you're firing an uzi at a big rig, or you're yelling at sharks. How do you explain Phoebe Tonkin ending up in all these tough-girl roles?
I don't know, I'm literally the most awkward, socially strange person. And I always end up like, as you say, a badass? I think it's because I have dark hair and dark eyes. And kind of pointy, evil-looking eyebrows. Because I always get sent stuff like that. It's always the witch or the bitch. When really I just wear weird glasses and pajamas all the time.

Phoebe Tonkin talks Hayley/Caroline/Tyler

The Secret Circle‘s Phoebe Tonkin shows up in Mystic Falls this Thursday (The CW, 8/7c) as Hayley, a werewolf who helped Tyler free himself from Klaus’ mental chains. As a result, she and the hybrid have shared quite the traumatic experience, which might spell trouble for Tyler’s current romance.

“Hayley is a little bit of a threat to that relationship because she has a history with Tyler,” says Tonkin. “She knew Tyler during a very emotional time when he was breaking his sire bond.”

In tough situations like that, people tend to lean on each for support and… something more. So can viewers trust that the two kept things strictly platonic in the past? “All we know is that they were friends and that they went through something big together, so they have a special bond because of that,”
replies the actress. “So they were just good friends. But I don’t know if, at the beginning, Caroline thinks that.”

That doubt will cause “a bit of friction” between the girls as the blonde vamp is “a little threatened” — there’s that word again! — “by Hayley because she doesn’t know how close her relationship was with Tyler in the past,” Tonkin says. As for the hybrid himself, he’s “a little surprised” by the unexpected appearance from his pal “because she’s, obviously, someone from his past, a past that we don’t know that much about. But she’s a good friend of his, so he’s just excited to see her.”

Tonkin advises fans of the couple not to fret too much. “Caroline and Tyler have their own situations going on,” she says. “I don’t think Hayley is a huge priority for Caroline at the moment. They have a lot of bigger things” to worry about. And the werewolf, too, is on a mission, so starting a relationship (or breaking one up) isn’t on her agenda.

“She’s hiding a secret, and she’s trying to find out something very important to her that we’re going to discover eventually,” teases the actress.

Despite all the turmoil Hayley may stir up, Tonkin hopes the audience likes her character, who she believes is a departure from her Secret Circle witch Faye – “It was definitely going to go darker, a little bit more twisted,” she says of what the future held for the canceled CW drama – even though the two are both “confident and strong and independent,” she says. “Hayley has a little bit more empathy. Faye is quite manipulative.”

But who has more fun: Werewolves, witches or the mermaids of her and Vampire Diaries co-star Claire Holt’s Australian series H20: Just Add Water?

“They all have their different kind of fun,” she replies with a laugh. “But it’s definitely nice to play Hayley. She’s a free spirit. She’s kind of ballsy. She’s different from what I’ve played before.”

Nina Dobrev On Air With Ryan Seacrest

Interview with Claire Holt

Klaus didn’t die at the end of season 3. Were you relieved by the writers’ decision to keep Klaus, and Joseph Morgan, around?
Absolutely! He’s one of my dearest friends in real life. I think he’s so talented and we have such great chemistry. I just love working with him. I didn’t think there would be a be a chance they wouldn’t keep him around. He’s just too talented to stick around in that box for too long!

Klaus chose to save Caroline over Rebekah in the season premiere. She’s been essentially disowned by her brother. How is this going to affect their relationship with each other going forward this season?
Rebekah’s always been there for her brother. Going back to that scene in the premiere she tells him “It’s always been me. Not Elijah. Not Kol. Not Finn. Me.” So she felt incredibly betrayed by him and it’s definitely going to impact their relationship throughout the season. She’s so stubborn and as much as she wants to be a family unit, and she loves her brother, she’s also furious at him for betraying her again. I think it creates a really interesting dynamic for the two of them. As much as I love when Klaus and Rebekah are a team it’s also really great to have those scenes where they’re in conflict as well. So I can tell you, it will definitely play a big role this season.

Rebekah is an incredibly strong character, but also fragile in many ways. Is this a fun dichotomy for you as an actor?
It’s so great! Multi-dimensional characters are so fun to play because there are always different aspects to explore. It’s nice to be able to play the tough girl – the badass original vampire – but it’s also great to be able to show her more vulnerable side – which is essentially her human side. I’m very fortunate to have been written a character like that. I think it helps you to become a better actor actually. I love what they do with her. I love that they allow me to explore those avenues with her. No matter how bad a character seems on paper what I always try to do is make them somewhat likable. I try to do that with Rebekah through her more vulnerable moments.

How hard is it going to be for Rebekah to hold her head up and continue on in High School this year? She’s been ostracized by so many people at this point.
She’s going to try to put up a bit of a wall and pretend it doesn’t affect her. She’s going to play that mean girl card. But it’s all an act. Obviously, being ostracized like that is going to be incredibly tough for her. There’s going to be some fun elements to it. She can’t really decide what she wants. One minute she doesn’t care. She wants to be the tough bad girl, and the next she really doesn’t, so there will definitely be that dynamic. I got to do some really fun scenes where that whole aspect is played up. [laughing] It’s great!

Is this all going to change her as a person?
I don’t know. I would like to think so. I hope so. I hope she tries to form some alliances because it’s going to be so lonely for her if she doesn’t. [laughing] I guess it depends on what direction the writers want to take her in. I’m just excited to see where it goes.”

I believe we’re going to get to see your old H20 cast mate Phoebe Tonkin soon.

Yes! Phoebe! My best friend! When I found out she was coming on the show I don’t think I squealed more loudly in my life. Ever. And I was on set. It’s so great.

Have you shared any scenes together yet?
We haven’t. Not yet. I’m hoping for some. We’ll see. I’d love to see them become allies. But it’s all up to Julie Plec.

Episode 4 ‘The Five’ looks like it’s going to be a pretty intense ride. There’s mention of powerful vampire hunters connected with Klaus’ past, and we know that Rebekah will deliver some news that will stun Stefan. What can you share?
It’s huge! What Rebekah reveals is actually really important to the direction and future of the season ahead. And the series too. It’s definitely going to change the way they all operate and think. It’s definitely a game changer … but I can’t reveal more. [laughing] You really will have to watch this one.

You stared in ‘Blue Like Jazz’ earlier this year, which seems just about as far from The Vampire Diaries as it’s possible to get. Was that a deliberate decision on your part?
They’re complete polar opposites. [laughing] Such different characters. One’s a good Christian girl and the other’s an evil vampire who goes around killing people! That’s the great thing about being an actor. I get to play so many different roles. I like to test myself. I think as an actor you have to be able to open yourself to different things. You have to be malleable.  I loved shooting that film. It was a wonderful experience.

Rick Worthy Cast As Rudy Hopkins

Bonnie Bennett's dad is finally coming to town!

Rick Worthy has been cast on The Vampire Diaries as Rudy Hopkins, the estranged father to witch Bonnie (Kat Graham), TVGuide.com has learned.
"It's time!" executive producer Julie Plec told us in June when we asked about Daddy Bennett's arrival. "This year is a big year of transitions. It's the end of senior year, and there's a rich home life for everybody we're going to explore."

Bonnie has rarely mentioned her father throughout the series, other than stating his disapproval of her family's supernatural history. Finally, after years of distance, Rudy will suddenly make an attempt to protect Bonnie from the dangers in Mystic Falls. About time, don't ya think?

Worthy, who makes his debut in the 10th episode, has previously appeared on CSI, Heroes and Battlestar Galactica.

Spoiler From TV Guide - 24th October 2012

Is Phoebe Tonkin going to get between my favorite Vampire Diaries couple, Tyler and Caroline?

Fortunately for Team Forwood fans, Tonkin's character Haley has much more on her mind than hooking up with her old friend Tyler. "Haley isn't there to do anything bad or mess up anyone's relationship," Tonkin tells us. "Haley's a tomboy; she just likes hanging out with the guys!" So what is she coming to town for then? Adds Tonkin, "She's trying to find out some things about her past and there are people in Mystic Falls holding onto that information that she wants." Considering she's a fellow werewolf, those people better watch out!

Spoiler From E! Online - 22nd October 2012

I need information on why Jeremy could see those tattoos on Connor right now!

Oh come on, you really think we're going to spoil a cool Vampire Diaries mystery for ya? While we won't say much, we can tell you that the invisible tattoo is a map of sorts and no, Jer's ability to see it is not related at all to his whole being-able-to-talk-to-ghosts thang. Bonus: The fact that Jeremy has the tattoos on his arm in a new CW promo pic is no coincidence.

Five Things To Happen Before Thanksgiving

1. A Stelena motorcycle ride. In this week's episode, titled "The Rager," Stefan takes Elena on a "thrilling" trip to show her that life as a vampire can still be fun. They may be immortal, but they still wear helmets. We don't get it, either. In the same episode, we'll see Damon teaming up with Meredith and (gasp!) Klaus, while Rebekah tries to rekindle her flirtation with Matt (and gets her claws into our newest ingenue, April).

2. A Delena keg party. As we previously reported, Damon and Elena will attend a frat party in which party-goers are expected to dress as their favorite murderers and murder victims. All the fake blood and booze-addled youths will give Damon the perfect opportunity to teach Elena a little something about choosing a victim. Suffice to say, Stefan won't exactly approve of these methods... but Elena sure will have a good time. (From what we're hearing about this episode, which airs Nov. 1... so will all you Delena fans on Tumblr.)

the-vampire-diaries-alexander-paul-telfer.jpg3. Flashback time! Klaus will tell Stefan about a powerful group of vampire hunters that he and his family (including our fave MIA Original, Elijah!) encountered back in the 12th century. We'll meet Alexander (left), and when you find out how his story collides with Rebekah's -- and how he relates to some current threats in Mystic Falls -- you're in for quite a surprise. (Also, Joseph Morgan tells us that Klaus' flashback hair for this episode was inspired by "Supernatural's" Jared Padalecki. He was joking, but it's still pretty accurate.)

4. Seeing things. In the Nov. 15 episode, "We All Go A Little Mad Sometimes," Elena -- who is still struggling to come to terms with her transformation -- will experience terrifying hallucinations, which cause her to make "a dangerous mistake." Could we be any more vague? Nope. Look for some major you-know-what to go down between Stefan and Elena in this episode.

5. At least one breakup. Before the show goes on its brief Thanksgiving hiatus, one couple will be seriously on the outs. All good things must come to an end, right?
